It seems all the prayers and pressure, and persistent pleads of clemency have appeared to pay off. Out of the prisoners due for execution, only Mary Jane Veloso came out with her life intact, even as she resigned her fate already.

However her other 8 companions were not so lucky – they were all executed as scheduled. The eight were Indonesian Zainal Abidin, Australians Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, Brazilian Rodrigo Gularte, Nigerians Sylvester Obiekwe Nwolise, Raheem Agbaje Salami and Okwudili Oyatanze, Ghanaian Martin Anderson.

The execution was the second round after the first was carried out on Jan. 18, during which six inmates from Indonesia, the Netherlands, Brazil, Nigeria, Vietnam and Malawi were killed by firing squad.

The Indonesian government cited the surrender of Veloso’s recruiter as the cause to delay the execution, to allow the Philippines to proceed with their investigation.

Naturally, you’d need a living witness, right?
