Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte fired back at Human Rights Watch, which had urged government to investigate his role in alleged extrajudicial killings of suspected criminals in the Mindanao city.

“You are all hypocrites,” Duterte said in a text message addressed to HRW that he sent to media Tuesday night. “You cannot even protect the human rights in your own country, the American-Africans (sic) and other minorities, not to mention your inutility in dealing with the genocide going on in Africa and others countries,” he said, referring to the mounting furor in the US over the killings of unarmed black men by police and the massacres that accompany various conflicts in Africa.

He dared “the bleeding hearts of US-based crime watch (sic): You want a taste of justice, my style? Come to Davao City, Philippines, and do drugs in my city. I will execute you in public.”

HRW on Tuesday urged the government to look into Duterte’s possible involvement in the Davao killings that the rights group said have claimed up to a thousand lives.

The New York-based watchdog, which has earned plaudits for its work, issued the call after Duterte said the reason Davao is the ninth safest city in the world is because criminals are killed there.

“The Philippine government should take zero-tolerance approach to any public official who publicly endorses extrajudicial killings as an acceptable means of crime control,” Phelim Kine, deputy Asia director at HRW, said in a statement.

Unfortunately, the HRW’s standing directly contradicts Davao’s situation and the people’s contentment there.
