Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has named a two-year-old rescued Philippine eagle after Japan’s popular spring attraction, Sakura (cherry blossoms).

The naming rites were held Friday in front of the Waterfront Hotel in Lanang, Davao City, President Rodrigo Duterte’s hometown.

“Through the support of the Japanese government, this eagle will be nursed back to health by the Philippine Eagle Foundation. In gratitude, the eagle will be named ‘Sakura (cherry blossoms).'”

The Philippine Eagle Foundation earlier said the eagle was found at the foot of the Pantaron Range, along the boundaries of Talaingod town in Davao del Norte and San Fernando in Bukidnon. Apparently female, the eagle was docile and was easily captured by concerned people, who then turned her over to the foundation.

Abe was given a photo of the eagle, which is kept at a nearby sanctuary, as well as a fluffy toy version draped in indigenous clothing.
